2019 Winston Voice Scholarship Winners

Sponsored by THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF ARTS AND LETTERS

In honor of Shirley Rabb Winston, NSAL established an annual scholarship for young classical singers between the ages of 16 and 22. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional talent and promise of future success. The scholarship funds are only for private study, special training or personal advancement in the applicant’s vocal career. They can be used for workshops, voice teachers, summer programs, etc. The funds cannot be used for college tuition, housing or travel. In most years, as many as eight to ten scholarships are awarded in varying amounts.

The maximum amount awarded to an applicant is $5000.

Sirley Rabb Winston (1920 – 2000) was the daughter of Naomi Rabb Winston. She was a graduate of American University in Washington, D.C. and studied voice at the Washington College of Music. She received a voice scholarship from the Washington Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters. During her career as a professional opera singer, she performed at Washington D.C.’s Constitution Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall and had major roles with the Metropolitan Opera Touring Company. For most of her career, the mezzo soprano sang with the New York City Opera. After retiring from her professional career, she taught opera at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She later moved to Virginia Beach, wrote “Music as the Bridge” and taught voice to select students.

2018 Winston Art Scholarship Winners

NSAL Florida East Chapter has proudly selected Ana Gonzalez and Isabella Addison to compete at the National Winston 2-D Art Scholarship. This annual scholarship in honor of the late Naomi Rabb Winston, a distinguished artist and mother of Shirley Rabb Winston, was established and made available, through the National Society of Arts and Letters, to young visual artists ages 16 to 22. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional talent and promise of future success. $10,000 in scholarships are awarded annually.
  • Scholarship Recipients

    Ana Gonzalez – Ana was born and raised in Miami. She started drawing at the age of seven and her passion for art never ended. She is currently attending the University of Miami and is pursuing her BFA in Painting with a minor in Art History. Her artwork has been displayed in the Scholastics PAMM, the New World Gallery, Studio Art Centers International Gallery, Oregon College of Arts and Crafts Gallery, Maryland Institute College of Art Gallery and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center.


    Isabella Addison -  Isabella Addison is a 20-year-old artist living in Boca Raton. She is a full-time student at Florida Atlantic University and also works as a painting instructor at a local studio called Pinot's Palette. Isabella creates in all mediums including: sculpture, drawing, paint making, ceramics, and photography, but her absolute favorite is acrylic painting. She is inspired by hyper realism and Japanese art.

    Meet Melany Whitney, NSAL Florida East Coast Winston Scholarship Chair in 2-D Art:


    For nearly two decades, Melany Whitney’s life has straddled the beauty and art worlds. After graduating from Cornell University’s School of Art and Architecture and working as a professional artist, she continued her career in fashion/cosmetics. She was professionally trained at the Fifth Avenue studios of Estee Lauder and Revlon and succeeded as an illustrious New York City model, actress and professional make-up artist.   


    Melany’s reputation as one of the nation’s most accomplished and artistic practitioners has led to professional associations with prominent plastic surgeons, including physicians at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. She is a faculty member of the continuing education department at the Florida College of Natural Health, maintains a busy private practice, and is an inspiring speaker who has been featured as an industry expert on “Dr. Oz”,“The Today Show,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “Inside Edition,” “Fox News” and CNN.
